Television is all about streaming and binging these days, so it’s easy to forget that regular old basic cable still schedules original programming during the summer months.
If you’re one of the few viewers who still like to just turn on the TV to see what’s on, here are six terrific ideas for beating the heat with your remote control.
Preacher (Sundays on AMC)
To be honest, I’m behind in all but one episode on this one, but the pilot blew me away. Based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, and produced by Seth Rogen (among others), Preacher is a sprawling saga that leaps between characters and locations.
I don’t know how it’s all gelling in recent episodes, but I’m certainly intrigued enough to dive back in as soon as I can. (Those with Google Fiber can now celebrate that it’s finally offering AMC in its channel lineup!)
BrainDead (Mondays on CBS)
The Walking Dead meets The Good Wife in this bizarrely-entertaining show about alien ants that inhabit Washington D.C. politicians. Instead of eating flesh, the “monsters,” who are no worse than real-life public figures, become more resolute in their Republican and Democratic ideologies.
Turn it on for a great performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, but stay for the exploding heads of people to whom the ants don’t take.
