One of the most prolific living filmmakers is releasing his new film on Netflix this year.
This is not a joke, this is not a slick, sarcastic lead into the next Adam Sandler flick. The teaser trailer for Roma, the evocative family drama written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, has been unleashed. For the first time since Y Tu Mamá También, Cuarón is filming in his home country of Mexico, focusing on a middle-class family struggling in a politically perilous Mexico City during the 1970’s.
The director is known for complex, visceral, long takes in Gravity and Children of Men. He does not seem to be shying away from them in Roma either, with trailer snippets of characters running through chaotic streets. The movie is shot in black and white but still looks vivid and lush. The music swells as the tide makes impact with the family matriarch. This is not a normal Netflix movie.
Roma is set to release on Netflix and select theaters later this year.
