New costumes for old comic book characters certainly isn’t a fancy new concept. Neither is well-known characters changing their names. Villains changing their ways and turning into heroes? Been there, done that. When t comes to decades-old characters, every once in a while the status quo needs to be shaken up.
Big changes are in store for Tony Stark, and Marvel has been tight-lipped about what the future will bring for the beloved Avenger. Back in July, it was reported that a 15-year-old girl is taking Iron Man’s place in the Marvel Comics universe. It was later revealed that Riri Williams will be known by the name Ironheart instead of Iron Man. It has now been revealed that the villain formerly known as Doctor Doom is also trading in his former metal armor and green cloak for something more Starky in a new comic called Infamous Iron Man.
This isn’t simply another instance of a villain trying to assume a new identity. At the conclusion of last year’s Secret Wars story arc, the Marvel Universe saw a few minor changes. One development within the pages of Invincible Iron Man was the appearance of Doctor Doom. The former Fantastic Four villain was seen no longer dawning a scarred face and appeared to want to aid Tony Stark. Stark reluctantly accepted his help while remaining extremely skeptical.
In October, the Eisner Award-winning creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev will reunite for Infamous Iron Man. We’re still waiting to to see what’s in store for Stark. Meanwhile, the entirety Marvel Universe will have to keep a close eye on Doom to see if he really has turned over a new leaf, as this very well may be just another one of his diabolical plans.
