Activision Blizzard announced today that it has formed a new division outside the realm of gaming. Dubbed the “Consumer Products Unit”, this new entity is set to oversee things like current franchise-inspired toys and collectibles. Heading up the new division as its president and CEO is Tim Kilpin, who’s résumé includes time at toy giant Mattel and entertainment behemoth Disney.
“Inspiring play, competition, and community underpins everything we do, and giving audiences new ways to experience our franchises is core to this commitment,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick declared in a recent statement. “Under Tim’s leadership, we will elevate our consumer product offerings to the same level of exceptional quality as our games and transform the ways audiences connect with the characters they love in their everyday lives.“
The Consumer Products division’s directive is to “expand and deepen audience engagement with Activision Blizzard’s iconic franchises through long-term retail partnerships, high-quality products, and all new consumer experiences.“
Activision Blizzard can easily be declared the biggest publisher in gaming. Some of its franchises include Call of Duty, Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Destiny, and Diablo. There are of course already toys and other collectibles that exist for these franchises, but the new Consumer Products division further unifies those pre-existing efforts.
The Consumer Products division is not the only new unit that Activision Blizzard has established recently. The company recently formed Activision Blizzard Studios to make movies and TV shows from its franchises, while it also bought MLG and created its own esports division.
