It looks like the X-Men cinematic universe could be getting yet another reboot. It has been reported that, following Hugh Jackman‘s departure after next year’s Logan, Fox is looking to add another reset to the franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio currently faces a number of issues with the lucrative superhero series.  In addition to Jackman’s exit, the contracts for key stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult have all come to an end.  As the site notes, renewing them will be a very costly exercise for Fox.  On top of that, the studio’s recent X-Men: Apocalypse saw a drop in box office receipts compared to its predecessors.

THR’s sources state that the franchise will be “reconfigured,” and that producer/writer Simon Kinberg is already working on a new script.  Bryan Singer, director of four of the movies in the series, is not expected to return.

In terms of X-Men movies currently in development, Deadpool 2 remains in pre-production, but currently lacks a director, following Tim Miller’s departure last month.  The fate of the Channing Tatum-starring Gambit remains uncertain–the film has had a variety of directors attached to it over the past two years, and has been delayed several times.

THR notes that The New Mutants is still moving forward, and that director Josh Boone could start shooting as early as next Spring.

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.  Check out the film’s trailer here.
