New Tiffany Haddish movie alert!
The trailer for Night School dropped this week, a new comedy starring Haddish and Kevin Hart. Hart plays a high school dropout with aspirations of upward economic mobility, inspiring him to take adult night classes to earn his GED. Haddish plays the motivational teacher, Taran Killam plays a square school administrator, and somewhere in the mix comedy ensues.
Kevin Hart and his cleverly named production company, Hartbeat Productions, team up again with producer Will Packer and his less creatively named production company, Will Packer Productions to create Night School. The duo previously collaborated on the Ride Along movies and the Think Like a Man movies. Malcolm D. Lee, the director of the 2017 smash hit Girls Trip, was tapped to direct.
The information in the previous paragraph was not acquired from extensive IMDB research; this trailer lets you know in large neon letters. There are also subliminal connections with the way the trailer was constructed. These connections require the eye of an expert, with a keen sense to the most minute details. Pay close attention because some moments seem a little too familiar:
- Hart’s character accidentally blows up an entire building, causing him to fly back and scream. Turns out the “Hart Fly Back and Scream” tactic is used in the trailers for both Ride Along and Ride Along 2. The joke is used again later in the Night School trailer when Hart drives a car backwards into a post. Hopefully they save a “Hart Fly Back and Scream” for Night School 2.
- When Hart arrives at a potential new job, he finds out that he was hired to fit in a tiny chicken costume. The short joke is very similar to the trailer of *insert Kevin Hart movie here*.
- Taran Killam’s character has some issues with cultural appropriation during his conversations with Hart and Haddish. The hilariously awkward moments are akin to Kate Walsh’s agent character talking to everyone in Girls Trip.
- Delightful comedy actor Romany Malco is another student at the night school. Malco stars in the Think Like a Man movies. This connection is admittedly not as subliminal or exciting as the others.
- There is a very quick tease to what looks like will be a dance off between Hart and Haddish. If it is even close to the dance-off from Girls Trip, arguably one of the top scenes of last year, then the movie should be worth the price of a ticket.
Nothing is wrong with connecting a new movie to other successful movies. Night School is not the first to do this, and it will not be the last. It does not come out until September 2018, so there is still time to give Girls Trip a few dozen more rewatches.
