As the new year begins, audiences everywhere eagerly await the arrival of the next big genre hit. Hoping to hit things off a bang XLrator Media (Tokyo Tribe, Housebound) has acquired North American distribution rights to the post-apocalyptic horror-thriller DRIFTER and will release the film in theaters on February 24, as well as VOD and iTunes on February 28.
The plot follows a pair of outlaw brothers (Drew Harwood and Aria Emory) who seek temporary refuge in a desolate town inhabited by a family of psychotic cannibalistic lunatics.
Described by XLrator Media’s CEO Barry Gordon as “a stylish and wicked thriller infusing bloodthirsty cannibals with a Mad Max aesthetic…” DRIFTER is the feature debut of Von Hoffmann who previously directed several short films, including Fuel Junkie, White Trash and Vodka 7, which have made the rounds at various film festivals.
Judging from the trailer below, it looks to be a mix of the aforementioned Mad Max, paired with what feel like the 1-2 combo of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the original The Hills Have Eyes. Since homages and throwbacks are a good entry point these days, as concerns making ones mark in horror, this may just be a film to keep an eye out for.
