New Men In Black Set For 2019, Won’t Be A “Jump Street” Crossover

Columbia Pictures

We’ve known for some time now that Sony has been planning to reboot Men in Black, and it was leaked/reported last year that the next film in the comedy/sci-fi franchise would be a crossover with the “21 Jump Street” films. Now, it has been reported that a new Men in Black movie is in the works, with nothing to do with the Jump Street franchise.

According to Deadline, Sony is fast-tracking the movie and has slated a release of May 17, 2019.  Although Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their roles from the three original films, the new film will still be set in the same universe as oppose to being a remake of the 1997 original.

The movie gets its script from Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, who previously wrote Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.  Deadline stated that the pair have “have scripted a contemporary sci-fi pic about the black-clad secret force that protects earth from the alien scum of the universe, focusing on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films.

While this new film will not be the promised Jump Street crossover, that film is actually still in development at Sony.  That prospective movie would be titled MIB 23 with director James Bobin helming the project.

All three original Men in Black movies had great box-office success.  Although the third film was not as critically well received as the first two, it still made a whopping $624 million at the worldwide box office.  In total, the series has made more than $1.6 billion worldwide.
