I know many of us were hoping for David Fincher to continue making his Stieg Larsson adaptations. Unfortunately, the world is a cruel place sometimes. After years in development Sony has gone a different way and rebooted the franchise with ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web‘. A novel written after Larsson’s death and is not a part of his original ‘Millinium’ trilogy. Claire Foy took over the role of Lisbeth Salander and Fede Alvarez was brought in to direct. If you want want to see what everyone’s favorite hacker is up to, check out the trailer below:

It’s definitely different from the first trailer. Which I thought was an outstanding teaser trailer. This new one has to carry more of the heavy lifting and give you an overview of the plot. Foy looks like she will be outstanding as Salander. Sylvia Hoeks of ‘Blade Runner 2049’ seems to be a worthy antagonist as well.

The supporting cast is loaded with intriguing choices by great character actors. Stephen Merchant, LeKeith Stanfield, & Cameron Britton; oh my! Vicky Krieps is also in the film. Fresh off of her Oscar nominated role in ‘Phantom Thread’. Alvarez’s work on ‘Don’t Breathe’ & ‘Evil Dead’ make me think he might be an inspired choice for ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web‘. It also doesn’t hurt that he seems to have kept Fincher’s black & blue visual style for the film.

Movie’s based on paperback thrillers are always a gamble. For every well thought out masterpiece like ‘Gone Girl’, you get 3 or 4 like ‘The Snowman’. The fact that we have heard no buzz about this film is definitely concerning. However, I choose to believe my eyes and the trailers look awesome. Add to that the fact that a cast this stellar and Fede Alvarez’s talent, this one could end up surprising us all. ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ opens on November 9, 2018.
