New Details Have Emerged For The Tomb Raider Film Reboot

New details have emerged for the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot, set for release in 2018 and will star Alicia Vikander as the one and only Lara Croft.

In a recent interview with Hey U Guys, producer Graham King stated that the film would focus upon Lara’s search for her missing father. “This is kind of what we call a back to the roots story,” said King. “This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it.

I think the storytelling is really good and I think we’ve got the right crew and a great director,” he added.

King’s comments tie into Vikander’s statements about the direction of the movie earlier this year. “They told me they were doing the film based on the reboot of the game from 2013,” she told HitFix in July. “That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.

In March, director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) praised the 2013 game and said his film will try to do something in the same vein. “I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well,” he stated. “I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.

The previous two Tomb Raider films — 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life — starred Angelina Jolie. The first movie remains the highest grossing video game adaptation ever in the United States, but the disappointing box office returns for The Cradle of Life, combined with Jolie’s reluctance to revisit the character, saw that a third film never materialized.
