For almost two decades now, the X-Men have dominated the box office. At least financially, if not always in terms of quality. 6 main movies, over 2 different timelines. 3 main spin-offs (Wolverine) and two tangentially world connected flicks (Deadpool). Not too shabby for a series that started off with people making fun of costume choices. Of course, it all comes down to one final swan song, before a studio merger throws everything out of whack. Enter Dark Phoenix. We’ve seen a couple trailers already hinting at the destruction in store, but today’s footage takes things to a whole new level. See for yourself.
If you’re gonna go out, might as well go out swinging and screaming at the top of your lungs. Or so that’s the indication given from everything in the above. Jean Grey looks absolutely pissed here. Plus, she doesn’t care what side you’re on apparently, attempting to take out anyone who gets in here way. It looks like at least one to two characters aren’t making it out of this one alive. It’s hard to tell who that’ll be exactly, since continuity-wise, this trailer is all over the place. Thankfully, we’ve got that handy-dandy official synopsis that you all love, to help us out:
“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”
Did you like the trailer? Are you burnt out on this franchise or sad to see it go? Does Wolverine make yet another cameo here? Is that New Mutants movie ever coming out? The comment section is yours. While you’re thinking, remember to mark your calendars for June 7th, when the Simon Kinberg directed Dark Phoenix bursts into theaters. Regardless how you feel about the series at this point, you at least want to know how it ends. In the meantime here’s the film’s poster, cramming everyone important to the story, in one compact package.
