Netflix is bringing back the Goregeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.)! For those of you thatdon’t know what G.L.O.W. is let me hit the pause button and catch you up to speed. It is a women’s professional wrestling promotion begun in 1986 (the pilot was filmed in December 1985) and continued in various forms after it left television. It featured a cast of colorful characters, strong women, and over-the-top comedy sketches were integral to the series’ success. Most of the performers were actresses, models, dancers, and/or stunt women hoping to get into show business through wrestling. I’m envisioning something like pro wrestling spliced with The Office style of work place documentary.
What better place to start than with Alison Brie! If you want a colorful sassy pants character to portray a Gorgeous Lady of Wrestling than look no further. She joins the cast alongside Nurse Jackie’s Betty Gilpin. Orange Is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan is producing the series, which was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is the New Black).
Marc Maron will star as Sam Sylvia, a washed-up Hollywood director with “a very complicated history with women” who helps a group of 14 ladies create their own wrestling show.
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS AND BOILERPLATE:
The Netflix Original is inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, coked-up B-movie director who now must lead 14 women on the journey to wrestling stardom.
GLOW debuts on Netflix June 23.
GLOW is created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds). Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive produce alongside Flahive and Mensch who are serving as showrunners.
