AMC’s Better Call Saul setup a very unique activation for fans at SXSW. Awhile ago they released a teaser for season 3 that gave fans of Breaking Bad a lot to look forward to. The teaser featured Gus Fring in a Los Pollos Hermanos commercial urging customers to come in and try some new curly fries. At Los Pollos Hermanos you can “Taste the Family!”
AMC brought the commercial to life in the most awesome way possible – with a Los Pollos Hermanos pop-up activation. Not just a photo op, but an entire fast food restaurant complete with a chicken mascot, employees, Saul’s beat up car and marquee. Fans could wait in line for a chance to go inside the restaurant and sample some of Fring’s famous fries! Let me tell you, they were fucking delicious. I had 3 bags of fries and still wanted more. Then I started wondering if they were sprinkling some “blue sky” on them – because I was hooked.
Later in the week AMC held a private event for press with Giancarlo Esposito and Bob Odenkirk in attendance. Esposito greeted fans outside before he headed into the restaurant to hand out curly fries to the press and answer questions in an awesome hybrid Q&A as Gus Fring and Giancarlo.
Esposito was also at SXSW to promote the world premiere of a film he directed titled “This Is Your Death” (review here) The film takes an unsettling look at reality T.V. where a disturbing hit game show has its contestants ending their lives for the public’s enjoyment. It premiered to rave reviews.
Not to be out done Bob Odenkirk was involved in several events during SXSW. Aside from the Los Pollos promo he also was a featured speaker, appear on Comedy Bang Bang and Improv4Humans along with a small cameo in “The Disaster Artist.” Even with a grueling schedule he took time out to spend with his fans, take photos, sign autographs and have a personal moment of conversation with them. It was an amazing experience for fans.
