We’re currently in a new age of music biopics. Bohemian Rhapsody has made a gazillion dollars at the box office, while racking up countless award nods. Rocketman, about Elton John, comes out in May. Not to mention what feels like a dozen other films that are in the works. Even A Star Is Born, which follows fictitious musicians, fits the mold, too. Regardless how you feel about this resurgence, it’s not likely to go away, anytime soon. Since people have different musical tastes, it’s naturally understandable to see many genres covered. So, it makes sense that a band whose antics on and off stage are as well known as Mötley Crüe, would also get this treatment. Today, the upcoming film based on their exploits, The Dirt, received its first trailer. Take a look.

Here’s the official synopsis, to clue you in on what supposedly makes this film special:

“Based on Mötley Crüe’s 2001 best-selling autobiography, The Dirt is an unflinching and uncensored story about sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll, fame, and the high price of excess. Director Jeff Tremaine (JACKASS co-creator, BAD GRANDPA) shows us just how Nikki Sixx (Douglas Booth), Mick Mars (Iwan Rheon), Tommy Lee (Colson Baker), and Vince Neil (Daniel Webber) took Mötley Crüe from the Sunset Strip to the world stage, and what it meant to become the world’s most notorious rock band.”

It all looks, well, just as you’d expect. Granted, if you’re a giant Crüe fan, this might work wonders for you. There’s nothing wrong with that. Yet, for all it wants to revel in the bad behavior of the band, a slick and glossy sheen covers the proceedings here. Which is commonplace when it comes to these kinds of films. It’s just hard to see what separates it from the rest of the pack. Specially at a time when Lords of Chaos is currently out and takes capturing a bands infamy to numerous extremes. Not that the two necessarily overlap. Just that things here appear to be of the tamer variety, by comparison. Of course, this is only a trailer and the whole thing could be wilder than this lets on. We’ll have to tune in to really find out.

What do you all think of the trailer? Are you starting to feel burnt out on biopics, in general? What band would you like to see covered next, if they have to make more? Do any of these proposed films seem redundant, when numerous VH1 Behind The Music specials exist? Sound off in the comments, we’re curious to see what you think. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 22, when The Dirt lands on Netflix. As it’s premiering on that streaming giant, you can expect everyone and their mothers will be talking about this one that weekend. You wouldn’t want to feel left out, right?
