With only three set release dates for upcoming films, the future of the DC cinematic universe remains uncertain. Fortunately, one of those confirmed films – Shazam – has officailly started shooting.
Director David F Sandberg has revealed thebeginning of production on his Instagram. While the clapperboard in the image displays the working title of Franklin, we know that Shazam is set to start production in early 2018. That and Sandberg uses Shazam’s iconic lightning bolt symbol as an emoji. Check it out below –
Shazam is scheduled to hit theaters on April 5, 2019. The film will star Zachary Levi as Billy Batson, the kid who transforms into a superpowered hero when he shouts the word “Shazam!” Levi, no stranger to the superhero genre, already has a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played Fandral in both Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok.
Sandberg previously stated that Shazam will be much lighter in tone compared to other films in the DC movie universe. “The big attraction for me with that character is the fact that every kid dreams of being Superman, right? I mean I certainly did, and [Billy Batson] is a kid that gets that chance,” he said. “He gets to become the superhero. So it’ll be big with superpowers in a way. In terms of what people can expect, I think this will be one of the more fun or lighthearted movies so far in the DC universe. It certainly will be a departure.”
Shazam made his first appearance in 1939, where he was known by the name Captain Marvel. The character was later bought by DC in 1971, when he was renamed, due to Marvel’s previous ownership of the name Captain Marvel. A live action Shazam TV show broadcasted in the mid-70s, while an animated show followed later in 1981.
The other DC movies confirmed for release are Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2. Aquaman is set to arrive in November of this year, while the Wonder Woman sequel will be hits theaters November 2019.
