The first set of dialogue we hear from the new trailer for ‘Annihilation’ from ‘Ex Machina’ director Alex Garland. It is certainly fitting after you dig into the rest of the trailer.
‘Annihilation’ is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy. While I am not familar with the novel one thing is for sure, it is bat shit crazy in the best possible way.
Natalie Portman stars as a biologist who heads a mission into an environmental disaster zone in order to figure out what happened to her ailing husband. That area is known as “The Shimmer.” A trippy shiny transparent barrier that they must pass through to find the answers they are looking for. At first glance his is a beautiful lush landscape. Full of fairy tale like creates and colors that will soon turn all to dark.
As they start exploring they come across several creatures. But all of them aren’t as pretty and peaceful as they may seem. They quickly realize something isn’t right when they kill a crocodile shark hybrid. Just when you think things can’t get any worse a god damn Werebear pops out of the woods, breaks through the fence and attacks one of them.
What the hell is the “Shimmer?” Is it a portal to another dimension? Or simply a fairy tale version of Chernobyl? Either way I can’t wait to explore more of this strange and mesmerizing world through the eyes of Natalie Portman.
The film also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac.
