Because Literally Anything Is Possible, Here’s The Trailer For ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’

Money doesn’t lie. As much as many people bemoan the prospect of certain movies adapted from video game properties or something based on a fad, cash is still king. Such as when everyone scoffed at the idea of an animated Angry Birds movie. There was now way it would succeed! Who would want to see such a thing? Then it brought in over $300 mil worldwide. More than tripling its budget. When that happens, specially concerning a kids movie, a sequel can’t be far behind. Which brings us to this little trailer that popped up today, for The Angry Birds Movie 2.

I will say this much about the footage, kids are likely to love it. And given that this is aimed squarely at them, that’s encouraging to say the least. There’s just something about the repeated humor (even in short succession) that feels a little one note. At least they’re changing things up a bit, by adding an ice component to things.

Though the trailer hints at the overall story, here’s the official synopsis to fully spell everything out:

“The flightless angry birds and the scheming green piggies take their beef to the next level in The Angry Birds Movie 2! When a new threat emerges that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger, Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), and Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) recruit Chuck’s sister Silver (Rachel Bloom) and team up with pigs Leonard (Bill Hader), his assistant Courtney (Awkwafina), and techpig Garry (Sterling K. Brown) to forge an unsteady truce and form an unlikely superteam to save their homes.”

Now, what’s conveniently left out of the above, is Leslie Jones’ Zeta, a giant purple bird who serves as the film’s “antagonist”. It also raises a question of why this bird lives on that island, instead of pengiuins, but then I know nothing of the Angry Birds mythology. In addition to the new voices listed above a change was made behind the scenes. Taking over the directors chair is Tony Leondis (The Emoji Movie) and John Rice (Rick & Morty), while original Ice Age scribe Peter Ackerman (The Americans) is writing things. That’s an odd assemblage of talent, to be honest, but a group that makes us curious of what kinds of weirdness could be up the film’s sleeve.

What do you all make of this trailer? Is this a film your kids will lose their minds over? Did you happen to enjoy the first film? Tell us what you think down below. The Angry Birds Movie 2 crash lands in theaters, at the end of the Summer, on August 16th. Please insert your own “staying cool, while out in the heat” pun, as you enjoy this first poster for the movie.
