After 3 teaser trailers for Hulu’s upcoming Stephen King series ‘Castle Rock’ the official trailer has finally arrived and provided slightly more context around Bill Skarsgard’s character known as “The Kid.”

For those of you not familiar with ‘Castle Rock’ yet – it is a psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, that combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.

The fictional Maine town of ‘Castle Rock’ has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to ‘Castle Rock.’

The original teaser that announced the series showcased a visual treatment that mentioned several of King’s novels – including Pennywise. As new teaser trailers have been released and panels at conventions have popped up online we have been told that Skarsgard would NOT be reprising his role in any way as Pennywise the dancing clown from It. Instead I assumed his character “The Kid” is a nod to ‘The Stand’. Now I am not so sure. Hear me out for a second.

What if “The Kid” actually is Pennywise in a different form. After all “Fear takes many forms.” We see a group of children in masks that almost feels like a cult. He preys upon children the most. No one knows exactly how he ended up in Shawshank and they mention he was down in a hole. Much like the well Pennywise resides in ‘It’.  But the most telling nod to Pennywise are the close up shots of Skarsgard. Much like Pennywise he has 2 different color eyes and seems just a bit off.

Hulu is bringing ‘Castle Rock’ to Comic-Con and will treat fans to the first episode in the series – but only time will tell what is truly going on with Skarsgard’s character.
