A new chapter in the beloved Ring horror franchise is almost here. After rumors for months about a follow-up to The Ring we finally have a trailer for Rings! In the trailer a young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. Sound familiar? She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before. Plot twist!
When I saw the original Ring film I knew very little about it or the Japanese source material. It actually scared the crap out of me and become one of my favorite horror films mainly due to the cryptic tape and the nature in which it could be passed around for ages. Now we have a new way to pass around the video through digital means instead of a VCR tape. However with the popular resurgence of VHS collectors everything old is new again.
