Amazon Shows First ‘Suspiria’ Footage at CinemaCon

Over lunch at CinemaCon on Thursday, Amazon Studios debuted gory footage from its upcoming remake of Suspiria.  As Dakota Johnson practices ballet, every move results in horrifying consequences for another young dancer in a different studio… she dances… the other woman is ripped apart.

Hmmm… I don’t remember that scene from Dario Argento’s 1977 classic.  Oscar-nominated director, Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) claims that the movie is not so much a remake as it is an homage to the emotions he felt watching the original Suspiria.

If it sounds intense, Johnson says filming it did something even three Fifty Shades of Grey movies did not: sent her to therapy.  Supposedly, conditions on the set were perfect for horror, but sent the actress over the edge.  “We were in an abandoned hotel on top of a mountain.  It was cold as shit, and so dry.”

While making a new Suspiria doesn’t necessarily please fans of the original, some were pleased to hear that Thom Yorke from Radiohead is composing the score.  For inspiration, he says he watched Blade Runner to hear what Vangelis did with its music.  What, no Goblin?

Remake or homage, the plot synopsis sounds familiar:

American ballerina Susie (Johnson) arrives at a prestigious dance academy in Berlin right when a student named Patricia (Chloë Grace Moretz) disappears mysteriously. Classes continue under the watchful eye of the academy’s art director, Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton). Following bloody murders that take place at the Academy one after another, it doesn’t take long for Susie to realize that a dark secret is behind these.

Following their CinemaCon panel, Amazon Studios released the teaser poster for Suspiria (see below).  The movie is expected to arrive this fall, but no release date has yet been announced.
