Upcoming ‘Duke Nukem’ Film Finally Has its Star

Video Game movies are still looking for their first truly great entry in the genre. ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and ‘Tomb Raider’ have both come and left without making much of an impression. So maybe it’s time we go back to the neon 90’s and see if the answer could be found in the world of Duke Nukem. This week it was announced that Paramount and Platinum Dunes have made a huge step forward in finally bringing Nukem to the big screen by casting their lead. It’s none other than the face that runs the place, the leader of the Cenation. It’s John Cena (Yabba Dabba Do!)

The film is still a ways off, one of the producers has even admitted they still do not have a script. There is some good news about the direction they’re heading in. According to comicbook.com, they are using the Deadpool films as inspiration. They said “We are working on Duke Nukem right now. It’s going to be about tone. That’s about tone. How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone? I think we have to do that and if we don’t get the tone right then we’re not going to make the movie.”

John Cena definitely looks the part of Duke Nukem and his acting career is blossoming at the moment. He was widely praised for his ‘Trainwreck’ performance and is getting rave reviews for ‘Blockers’. Will he be enough to finally get video game movies over the hump? Who knows. He already looks great with a flat top though, and that’s half the battle.
