Welcome to The Weekender. A compilation of stories we didn’t get a chance to touch on earlier and a collection of some of our favorite piece from the week.
In this week’s edition we have good news for J.J. Abrams fans, bad news for Marvel fans, and ugly news for anyone associated with Moviepass. Let’s get to it!
Dominic Monaghan Joins Star Wars Cast
Dominic Monaghan will be joining the cast of J.J. Abrams ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’. This will reunite Monaghan with Abrams who was an Exec. Producer on ‘Lost’. Outside of his time in Middle-Earth, Monaghan is probably best known as Charlie on the ABC hit. Monaghan said of his of involvement in the film “The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved”. Monaghan is the second Abrams’ alum to join the cast after Keri Russell. Perhaps J.J. is seeking a familiarity as he faces the herculean task of both following ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ and concluding the Trilogy.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3’ Halts Production
The Guardians of the Galaxy have definitely hit a rough patch as of late. Their fearless leader James Gunn was unfairly fired last month. A failed campaign was launched to get Gunn rehired and Co-star Dave Bautista has hinted at asking to be released from his contract. Lost in all this news was the fact that the studio has been scrambling to find a replacement as the film is deep into pre-production. However, as of friday that is no longer the case. The rumors are that the production shut down temporarily for a kind of regrouping phase. It’s highly unlikely, but maybe this delay will allow for a second look at rehiring Gunn.
Moviepass Kills Annual Subscriptions
Moviepass announced in an email that they will be refunding everyone who signed up for their annual subscription. These individuals will receive a prorated amount of the money they paid. The company will also be converting them to the monthly plan. This story is yet another setback from the company who sought to change the way we watch movies. Moviepass had a great idea (bring the subscription model to Theaters). Unfortunately, The company had some trouble with phase 2 of their master plan. I guess it’s true what they say, you either die venture capitalist hero; or you live long enough to see yourself become a penny stock.
Halloween Coming to Fantastic Fest 2018.
October 31st might have been the night he came home, but September 20th will be the night he returns. David Gordon Green’s ‘Halloween’ will have its world premier as the opening night film for Fantastic Fest 2018. Our own Adrian Torres will be in Austin and providing coverage and review from the festival.
Danny Boyle has left ‘Bond 25‘ and Edgar Wright might be coming in.
It was a week an up and down week for those of us who are big fans of 007. Hearing that Boyle would not be part of project was a big let down. The news that Edgar Wright might be the man to replace him helped ease the pain.

Hype around the latest Rom-Com from Netflix is palpable. Our own Evan Hoon gave his glowing thoughts on the film.
