SXSW 18: Adult Swim’s ‘Joe Pera Talks With You’ in Almost a Whisper

Comedian Joe Pera has a show out on Adult Swim. Joe Pera Talks With You is a wholesome show, different from what you might expect to see on Adult Swim, but it still holds true to that weird awkward humor. The show is about really mundane everyday experiences. Like going to breakfast, picking out a Christmas tree and dancing when you are at a wedding. Joe Pera’s soft quiet almost whisper of a demeanor and almost monotone delivery of such topics is slightly uncomfortable yet amusing and funny.

His SXSW showcase consisted of 3 episodes, and four stand up comics including himself. Each act hilarious and more bizarre than the last. He was joined on stage by comedians, Connor O’Malley, John Reynolds (of Search Party) and Jo Firestone. O’Malley and Firestone both have roles in Joe Pera Talks With You and as Pera put it, John Reynolds is just here because he is in town and I think he is funny. Watching all four stand up performances was a bizarre treat.

Episode one of Joe Pera Talks with you is about breakfast. Yes, breakfast. As Joe navigates his way through the diner talking with friends he sees enjoying their breakfast, he analyzes their choices and weighs them against his own decisions he will have to make once he sits down to order. Again there is something about his monotone delivery and awkward social interactions that make this extremely uncomfortable yet really amusing to watch. Joe Pera is that inner monologue we all have that is constantly helping us make decisions as we move through our day. Pera is out here for all of us to give us that extra push and guidance.

Episode six is titled, Joe Pera Reads the Church Announcements. This was the third episode we watched for the evening and I have to say probably the funniest. Joe wants to read the church announcements but he has recently discovered The Who’s Baba O’Reilly and can’t seem to talk about anything else. He also can’t do ordinary tasks without calling into the local radio station and requesting it every hour. I will have to say that I heard Baba O’Reilly more times in that eleven minute Episode than I probably have in my entire life, and it made me laugh really hard.

If you are interested in having Joe Pera talk with you and have him help you navigate through life’s most boring topics I urge you to give this show a try. You will find yourself laughing at things you probably never thought as funny. Which I think is the beauty of Joe Pera and his comedy.
