Mcfarlane Answers the Question of “Why Blumhouse?”

New Line Cinema

Last week, we reported that the Spawn reboot has finally found a home and when it goes into production; it’ll do it with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. Since then, we’ve heard that a cop named ‘Twitch’ will the main character of the film (sounds interesting), that the inspiration for this ‘Twitch’ Character was Leonardo Dicaprio in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ (you have my attention), and finally that Todd Mcfarlane’s hope for this film is to make a low budget horror thriller with ‘Jaws’ serving as his main inspiration (This is now sounding like the greatest film ever made).

But still, the question remained why bring a property who genre is usually associated with big budgets to a producer who’s made quite the career of doing the opposite. Macfarlane explained why in an interview with comicbook.com

“Jason’s brand with Blumhouse Productions has been these R-rated, low budget, scary, cool movies that are successful, and they work, and they allow you then to make another movie… I needed to surround myself with people that were going to make me look good and one of the first steps is to get a good production house – and it sounds silly what I’m about to say – that can make a low budget movie.”

You’d be forgiven for worrying that Mcfarlane is too invested in this project as he created Spawn during his time at Image Comics and is still writing for issues for the character today. He is also planning on writing, directing & producing the film so he will be wearing a lot of hats on set. I must admit though, I love everything he’s said about the project so far. He’s got big dreams for it, but also realistic expectations. I hope it’ll a huge success. I mean, who doesn’t want to see “Demon Jaws”?
