The directors behind Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War (Joe and Anthony Russo) are adapting cult-classic gang film The Warriors as an hour long television drama series for Hulu. The streaming service continues to offer new original content following up on two recent hits that include; The Path and 11:22:63.
The brothers will re-imagine Walter Hill’s iconic 1979 film, itself an adaptation of Sol Yurick’s classic novel. Their take will honor the original film while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence.
The source material was set in 1979, at a time when New York felt like parts were in the aftermath of a war zone brought on by rival gangs. The leader of the street gangs summons his members to take over New York City. When the leader is shot during the rally, one of the gangs, the Warriors, are falsely blamed for his death and its member must fight their way home while every other gang is hunting them down to kill them. Check out the original trailer below.
The Warriors series will be a Paramount Television Production in association with the Russo brothers, Getaway Productions. Joe and Anthony Russo and Mike Larocca serve as producers.
Paramount is also prepping The Alienist with Cary Fukunaga directing.
