Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ Sequel Has Officially Been Green-lit

In the oft-panned realm of the movie sequel, thank the gods that there may be a shining light off on the horizon. It appears as though Ridley Scott’s “swords-and-sandals” epic Gladiator will be getting another installment.

Little is actually known about what the movie with encompass, with many of the lead characters violently parting ways with the world in the first film. Spoiler alert… sorry!

Much of the storyline speculation circulating is revolving around Lucius, nephew to the Joaquin Phoenix‘s Emperor Commodus, who is slain by Russell Crowe‘s Maximus after the ordered murder of his family. Could we see a continuance of the Lucius story arc or will Scott decide to venture off in another direction entirely?

Opening in May of 2000, Gladiator killed at the box office, raking in over $400 million dollars worldwide. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, ultimately winning for Best Picture and Best Actor.

Rumored to also be attached to the project is writer Peter Craig, whose resume includes Ben Affleck’s drama The Town and 2018’s 12 Strong.

As Gladiator 2 is still in pre-production, very little is known regarding casting choices. Knowing Ridley Scott’s previous work though should give enough hope to moviegoers that this trek back to Rome will be nothing short of an epic!
