In the early 1970’s the legendary Director Orson Welles set out to make a movie about the movies. The film was a mockumentary that satirized both the dying studio system and the upcoming “New Hollywood”. Principal Photography lasted for over 5 years and resulted in 80 hours of footage.
In the last 40 years the film, ‘The Other Side of the Wind‘, has been subject ongoing litigation that prevented it from being completed. However, the film survived thanks to tireless work by stars Oja Kodar, Peter Bogdanovich and many others. Due to that work, ‘The Other Side of the Wind‘ will premiere at the Venice Film Festival this year. After that, Netflix will release the film globally on November 8th. Check out the trailer and see if the 40 year wait was worth it.
It’s easy for me to forget when I look back on ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Touch of Evil’ or ‘The Stranger’ that Welles’ later career was so experimental. ‘The Other Side of the Wind‘ seems to be just as avant garde as one would hope. Add to that John Houston dressed like Jack Horner from ‘Boogie Nights’ and i’d say we have ourselves a winner.
‘The Other Side of the Wind‘ Stars Houston, Oja Kodar, Bob Random, Susan Strassberg & Peter Bogdanovich. There’s also apparently some scenes with Dennis Hopper playing a young experimental director. A real “Dennis Hopper” type if you will. This whole thing looks weird in all the right ways. Also with this cast, I think 2018 could be a big year for Orson Welles.
