During last night’s broadcast of the the Golden Globes, Netflix covertly dropped the first of 2 teasers for the upcoming series, Santa Clarita Diet.
The official plot line seems fairly harmless: “Married couple Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel are real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. The couple’s lives take a dark turn after Sheila goes through a dramatic change”. Earlier today a second teaser was released and seems to play up the zaniness the show may lean in to.
This all looks fantastic. Netflix has been knocking it out of the park when it comes to their original properties and given that all episodes are available at once, they can release as many shows as they want, whenever they want. If the involvement of Barrymore and Olyphant in a comedy-horror tv show wasn’t enough to entice you, the rest of the cast may push you over the edge. Natalie Morales (Parks & Rec, White Collar), Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Richard T. Jones (Judging Amy, Jury Duty) all are slated to appear in multiple episodes. The real ace in the hole though, is that of the project’s showrunner and creator, Victor Fresco. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, all you need to know is that he was the creator behind My Name Is Earl, Andy Richter Saves The Universe and Better Off Ted. Mixing genres and comedy is something he has been doing for decades.
Netflix will release all episodes of Santa Clarita Diet for streaming starting on February 3rd. Be sure not to miss it.
