Netflix is bringing back the Goregeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.)! For those of you that don’t know what G.L.O.W. is let me hit the pause button and catch you up to speed. It is a women’s professional wrestling promotion begun in 1986 (the pilot was filmed in December 1985) and continued in various forms after it left television. It featured a cast of colorful characters, strong women, and over-the-top comedy sketches were integral to the series’ success. Most of the performers were actresses, models, dancers, and/or stunt women hoping to get into show business through wrestling. I’m envisioning something like pro wrestling spliced with The Office style of work place documentary.
What better place to start than with Alison Brie! If you want a colorful sassy pants character to portray a Gorgeous Lady of Wrestling than look no further. She joins the cast alongside Nurse Jackie’s Betty Gilpin. Orange Is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan is producing the series, which was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is the New Black).
Marc Maron will star as Sam Sylvia, a washed-up Hollywood director with “a very complicated history with women” who helps a group of 14 ladies create their own wrestling show.
