YiyrSynergy happens in the least expected places. Who would have thought there’d be two trailers, for two completely opposite series, both from Pendleton Ward, at the same time. Not us. Yet, then again we aren’t exactly complaining. If you’re an adult who liked Adventure Time, but wished it was a while lot trippier, we’ve got something to show you. Behold, the trailer for The Midnight Gospel.

To help make sense of all that (or not), here’s the official synopsis:

“Traversing trippy worlds inside his multiverse simulator, a space-caster explores existential questions about life, death and everything in between.”

Yeah, so that happened. There isn’t really a best way to sum up what is contained there. Simply put, The Midnight Gospel looks wild. A whole bunch of nonsense and insanity, that also comes off as rather compelling. Like a show Adult Swim felt was too audacious. Maybe that’s a tad overdoing it. There’s something interesting here though, from the wild animation style, to larger story hinted at. It could also be terrible, but also amazing.

The Midnight Gospel isn’t from the mind if Pendleton Ward though. It’s a collaborative effort with comedian Duncan Trussell. Trussell might not be someone whose name you’re immediately familiar with, but he’s been in several Adventure Time episodes, Drunk History episodes, as well as many Harmontown & Joe Rogan Experience episodes. Should that help give you an idea of his mindset.

What did you all think of the trailer? Was the trippy factor something you can latch onto or was it too much? Are you a big Adventure Time fan? What’s the weirdest animated series you’ve ever seen before? Be sure to share your thoughts down in the space below. Since you likely have some time on your hands, also be sure to check out the entirety of The Midnight Gospel, when it lands, exclusively on Netflix, starting on April 20th.
