There has been a resurgence of Hollywood tapping into our nostalgic hankerings with the launch of shows like Nefllix’s Full House and FOX’s X-Files, so why wouldn’t Married…with Children finally get their just desserts?
In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Married… made FOX a legitimate contender in the realm of evening television. Spawning outcries and protests, America had yet to see a television family as crude, witty and cutting edge as the Bundys.
The “charm” of Married… was the incredibly snarky interactions between the show’s central characters. Ed O’Neill (The West Wing; Modern Family) gave life to the often disparaged patriarch Al Bundy, a former high school football star turned shoe salesman with a penchant for playful hatred towards his wife Peggy, excellently portrayed by Katey Sagal (8 Simple Rules; Sons of Anarchy). Factor into that mix their children, the ever-so-oblivious and promiscuous Kelly Bundy, depicted by Christina Applegate (Anchorman; The Grinder) and the oftentimes culturally-confused Bud Bundy, played by David Faustino (Robot Chicken; American Dad!) and television had not only a runaway hit but viewer’s must-see Sunday evening show long before AMC’s The Walking Dead.
While the original airing of Married… wasn’t given a proper series finale, it’s almost fortuitous to think that because of this slight, new life can be given to the series. All of the original central cast seems to be on board according to Sagal. Ideas of the revival seem to point towards a continuation of Faustino’s Bud Bundy character, although additional details are unavailable at the time of publication.
No matter what direction or how long it takes the new project to make it back to your television, there is no doubt that the Bundy’s will continue to make you cackle, chuckle and cringe at their shenanigans and hijinks.
“STEEEE-RIKE!”
