If there’s any actress who can stir up excitment for a film in less than a minute, it’s probably Julia Roberts. That’s exactly the case with this first “trailer” for Ben Is Back. Yes, it’s hard to call this a trailer, as it’s more of a teaser or a clip at best. You know what, take a look and you’ll understand.
That’s essentially a clip. It doesn’t say too much about the story, but it sure captures an emotion. You pair Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges together, you’re gonna put butt’s in seats. If you need more traditional convincing, here’s the official synopsis for Ben is Back:
19 year-old Ben Burns (Lucas Hedges) unexpectedly returns home to his family’s suburban home on Christmas Eve morning. Ben’s mother, Holly (Julia Roberts), is relieved and welcoming but wary of her son staying clean. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother’s undying love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe.
The one odd part about Ben Is Back, is that it comes from writer and director Peter Hedges. Outside of the obvious nepotism (he’s Lucas’s dad) of course. Which is ok when your son just so happens to be that talented. More so that his directing output so far consists mostly of The Odd Life Of Timothy Green and Dan In Real life. That’s brought up, because there’s something slightly more polished about this one scene from Ben Is Back. Granted, the synopsis hints that heartstrings will be pulled, it may quickly become maudlin. Given that the release date is December 7, you can expect some form of awards campaign will be in order. We’ll keep you updated as more footage becomes available. Hopefully next time it will be longer than a minute.
