Today, Wattpad Studios has announced that Hulu has picked up Light as a Feather from AwesomenessTV and Wattpad in a straight-to-series deal.
Based on Zoe Aarsen’s supernatural thriller of the same name, Light as a Feather is a Wattpad fan-favorite with more than 2.9 million reads. The story follows five teen girls as they deal with the supernatural fallout stemming from an innocent game of “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.”
A joint venture between Wattpad, AwesomenessTV and Grammnet, Light as a Feather is the first Wattpad story to be picked up by Hulu.
This news is the latest in a series of deals coming from Wattpad Studios, including last week’s announcement that Sony Pictures Television has acquired the rights to Wattpad story Death is My BFF. This news also follows the recent expansion of Wattpad Studios in Asia as well as funding totaling $51 million from high-profile investors, including China’s Tencent.
“Light as a Feather is a captivating and unique story, with supernatural twists and thrills that readers all over the world have fallen in love with,” said Aron Levitz, Head of Wattpad Studios. “The story is another example of a Wattpad fan favorite that is perfect for adaptation and new life on another platform. We’re excited to be working with AwesomenessTV and Hulu to bring Light as a Feather to a new audience in a new format, while also giving the story’s millions of current fans another way to enjoy the story they couldn’t put down.”
“When I first joined Wattpad, I set out to create something unique, exploring characters and a world where female empowerment, friendship, and supernatural forces come together,” said Zoe Aarsen, author of Light as a Feather. “Wattpad is a place where people come together and connect over stories, discussing every twist and cliffhanger, so it was the perfect platform for my story. Teen horror is my passion, so I can’t wait to be able to share Light as a Feather with other horror aficionados on Hulu.”
ABOUT LIGHT AS A FEATHER:
McKenna Brady thinks her junior year of high school is going to be the best ever when she’s welcomed into the elite group of popular girls at Weeping Willow High School led by blonde, gorgeous Olivia Richmond. Prior to junior year, McKenna was known in her small town as the girl whose twin sister died in a tragic house fire, and she’s overjoyed at the prospect of redefining her identity. She has a date to the Homecoming dance with Olivia’s handsome older brother, and a good chance of being elected to student council. For the first time since McKenna’s parents divorced, things are looking up.
But everything changes the night of Olivia’s Sweet Sixteen sleepover birthday party. Violet, the shy, mysterious new girl in town, suggests that the girls play a scary game called Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, during which Violet makes up elaborate stories about the future ways in which beautiful Olivia, brassy Candace, and athletic Mischa will die. The game unsettles McKenna because she’s already escaped death once in her life, but she doesn’t want to ruin her friends’ fun. It’s only a game, she reminds herself.
But it doesn’t seem like a harmless game a week later when Olivia dies unexpectedly in a violent car crash, exactly as Violet predicted. And something begins haunting McKenna’s bedroom at night, leaving her clues that all seem to point to Violet. McKenna enlists the help of her cute next-door neighbor Trey in finding out exactly what kind of curse Violet has put on all of the popular girls in the junior class. As Violet rises to popularity and seemingly steps into the life Olivia left unfinished, McKenna and Trey know they only have a limited amount of time to bring an end to Violet’s game before more lives are lost.
The 10-episode horror series starts production in June.
