Earlier this week, Todd Phillips shared the first image from his new Joker origin film. It introduced us to a man named Arthur Fleck, a shaggy haired Joaquin Phoenix in 1980’s style clothing. Outside of that image, there hasn’t been much info about this new Joker tale. We know Phillips sees ‘The King of Comedy’ as an influence. Which is promising. We also know that Alec Baldwin was maybe cast in the film for 6 hours to play a Donald Trump-esque version of Thomas Wayne. This seems decidedly less promising.
Now we have our best glimpse so far of what Phillips and Phoenix seem to be going for in this new movie. The first test footage of the actor in full clown make-up has been released. Take a look below and decide for yourself what you think:
It’s certainly an interesting take on the character. I think many fans are like me and hope this adaptation will take certain cues from Alan Moore’s classic ‘The Killing Joke’. Namely the idea that Joker is an unreliable narrator and he has no exact origin. It’s also possible that this story about a failed stand-up from the 1980’s who turns to a life of crime will have no ambiguity and be considered a canonical origin for the Clown Prince of Crime. We will find out October 12, 2019 when the film is released.
Do you think Joaquin Phoenix will be one of the better Joker performances?
