It was June 2000 (Clinton’s America) when James Cameron first registered the domain name “battleangelalita.com”. In the years since, the film became a kind of running joke. The joke being that it was constantly rumored to be Cameron’s next project. However, with James now in living in pandora for the foreseeable future, the project fell into the hands of Robert Rodriguez (Cameron did remain on as a producer and co-writer).
Production began last year and today we have our first glimpse at the long awaited manga adaptation. Check out the trailer for yourself below:
I’m not hugely familiar with the source material, but this trailer seems… interesting? Robert Rodriguez has made movies i’ve liked before and the cast is outstanding. However, The CG seems to look like it’s only half-cooked during some spots in the trailer. We will still have 7 months until release so hopefully the rougher edges get smoothed out a bit. It’ll also be interesting to see if the big-eyed manga look will work for the supposed 2.5 hour run time. Or, will audiences run out screaming after 40 minutes of the physical embodiment of the uncanny valley staring them in the face.
‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is slated for a June 20, 2018 release. It will star Rose Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein & Jackie Earle Haley. Robert Rodriguez will direct the film based off of a screenplay by Rodriguez, James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis (Terminator Genisys).
