‘Dark Phoenix’ Trailer has Risen From the Ashes

Fox has been very hit and miss with their X-Men films as of late. Matthew Vaughn’s ‘X-Men: First Class’ was an fun surprise when it came out in 2011. I still have a soft spot in my heart for the ‘Days of Future Past’ adaptation. The most notable thing about ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ was discussions about how Oscar Isaac looked like Ivan Ooze. We have to believe in something in this world, so why not believe that Fox can recapture the magic that brought us some of the best super hero movies to date.

Dark Phoenix‘ will be the fourth film in the reboot franchise. This time it will focus, unsurprisingly, on the ‘Dark Phoenix’ story line from Astonishing X-Men. Sophie Tuner of ‘Game of Thrones’ will be reprising her role as Jean Gray. The rest of the really incredible cast will rejoining her for this latest film with new addition Jessica Chastain. All the elements definitely seem promising. Take a look at the trailer for yourself:

It looks… okay. There’s just a lot of things about this that give me pause. First, the fact that we’re still setting every sequel 10 years later irks me. I don’t know why because having characters not age over decades long stories is one of the most true to comic books motifs a film could do. The film also feels closest in tone and character to ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ which is simply a weaker entry in the franchise.

It’s not all mediocre though. I am not made of stone. Who doesn’t seeing Jessica Chastain in a white wig being ominous? I think McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence were all incredible gets for these movies and the fact that they’re still around should make any fan excited. It will also be interesting to see how Simon Kinberg does in his first time behind a directors chair. We won’t have to wait too long to find out if this is closer to ‘X2′ or “The Last Stand’ as ‘Dark Pheonix will be coming out in February 2019.
