Drew Goddard’s “Core Characters” in upcoming ‘X-Force’ Film

Amidst the overwhelming abundance of comic book films in today’s culture we have been granted with yet more on the newest upcoming franchise to get started. After the massive success of both Deadpool and it’s successor Deadpool 2 fans have been clamoring for more Ryan Reynolds everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed anti-hero. Well in a recent interview with the announced X-Force director Drew Goddard fans will definitely be getting more Deadpool but maybe not how they expected. Drew Goddard has announced the three core characters to star in the upcoming X-Force film, here is what he had to say about the upcoming film:

“It really all stems from a place of love; I love those comics, I love Ryan [Reynolds], I love Josh [Brolin] and I love Zazie Beetz. When I think of the comics, I think of Cable and Domino and Deadpool, and it’s really just knowing, ‘Oh, right, there’s a world in the X-Universe for the blunt instruments of mutantdom.’ It’s much more about the characters and my love for them than it is about any plot or story line. It’s more about loving them and wanting to see them bounce off each other.”

So what does this mean for the upcoming X-Force franchise? Well possibly less Deadpool screen time. With any ensemble cast it means that films will have to cut corners in order to make sure everyone has deserved screen time that helps create a fluid and complete movie. While Deadpool 2 proved that these characters could play nice together on-screen, I can’t help but think it was still Deadpool’s movie. The dynamic has to change entirely when two character’s are included in the story telling aspect, it no longer can stay just Deadpool’s film or narrative. With these three characters sharing the screen once again it could open up the opportunity to dive deeper into the characters of Domino and Cable. Possibly a romance blossoming between these two characters.

While both Domino and Cable can take away from the screen time of Deadpool it can ultimately help create better stories for all characters involved. While Deadpool’s charm and whit were enough to spark a worldwide phenomenon it has become apparent through the success of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) it was important to diverse and create unique and different genre within their own franchise to survive. My hope is that Goddard is able to explore the relationships between these characters in further detail and depth while maintaining same comic tone. One thing is for sure though, Drew Goddard definitely has his work cut out for him in juggling all three of these characters and possibly more to come.

I can say with certainty though, I am greatly looking forward to the return of all of these characters and am secretly hoping for a large leading role of both Fire Fist and if we are lucky we might get a little bit more of Peter. After the credit scenes of Deadpool a lot of loose ends were tied up and some close ended plot points were undone leaving this X-Force movie open for a large number of story opportunities. I just hope Drew Goddard can settle on the best one.
