For over a decade now there’s been one animation studio to constantly put out work to challenge the likes of Disney and Pixar. We’re talking, of course, about Laika. The company behind Coraline, The Boxtrolls, ParaNorman and, most recently, Kubo and the Two Strings. Today saw the release of the first trailer for their latest feature, Missing Link and it looks just as inccocuously charming as the rest of their films. Take a peek
The stop motion animation here looks amazing. Yet that’s one of the hallmarks that helps separate a Laika offering, from the rest of the pack. The trailer does feel a bit twee at times, but you gotta hook the kids in first. It’s also emblematic of the rest of the trailers from the studio. Squint and you can easily make out the deeper, family driven aspects to the story. Either way the voice cast is stacked here, with Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Timothy Olyphant and Emma Thompson just a few lending their talents. The lead of Mr. Link, as evidenced by the trailer is played by Zach Galifianakis. It was written and directed by Chris Butler, one of the main minds behind Paranorman. If this film can be half as good as that one, it’ll be great.
What do you think of the trailer? Are you won over by the quirky charms of Missing Link? Will you sign up to see just about any film Laika puts out? Let us know in the comments. The film comes out on April 19th, 2019, giving you plenty of time to catch up on any of the other films from the company, you may not have seen yet. In the meantime, here’s Missing Link’s official poster.
