Darren Lynn Bousman has carved out a nice corner in the world of horror for himself. After successfully directing the middle SAW entries (II – IV), he followed up with a few smaller efforts. Two of which (Repo The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival) have gone on in circles to become cult classics. That’s not to mention his foray into the world of immersive haunted house experiences with The Tension Experience. Now he turns, his attention to the subject of “nunsploitation” in his latest feature, St. Agatha.

Is it just us or do those intertitles absolutely screams “90’s DTV horror”? In most cases that would sound like a negative, but it may just be sign of the tone St. Agatha is going for. A wayward home for pregnant teens. The domineering Mother Superior. Something nefarious going on deep in the bowels of the house. It all seems classically formulaic in the best way. Of course, how it all comes together is what’ll determine whether it’s good or not.

In case you couldn’t view the above, we’re got an official synopsis, as well:

“Set in the 1950s in small-town Georgia, a pregnant young woman named Mary seeks refuge in a convent. What first starts out as the perfect place to have a child turns into a dark layer where silence is forced, ghastly secrets are masked, and every bit of will power she has is tested as she learns the sick and twisted truth of the convent and the odd people that lurk inside its halls.”

The inclusion there of “con woman” has us raising our eyebrows a bit. Is it meant to indicate the past Mary is running from? Or is it an element that may come into play and save her hide towards the end of the film? Regardless, this one looks like it could be a fair bit of fun.

What do you think? Does the world need more nunsploitation? What exactly do you think is going on in that basement? Hypothesize below, as we’ll be over in the corner saying Hail Mary’s until February 8, when St. Agatha hits Theaters and digital. To tide you over, here’s a sufficiently creepy poster, which reminds us there’s weird bandage people to contend with in this movie.
