I’ll admit it, and I’m not ashamed to say it, my favorite Angels are Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett-Majors and Jaclyn Smith. I imagine, though, there’s a generation that prefers Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. How do we all feel about Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska? Variety reports that they’ve been hired for to play a new generation of Angels in another reboot of Charlie’s Angels, to be directed by Elizabeth Banks.
Stewart graduated from the Twilight Saga to become an indie film (Personal Shopper) darling. Scott appeared in the most recent Power Rangers movie and plays Jasmine in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Aladdin. And Balinska has appeared mostly in UK short films and television, including Midsomer Murders. It remains to be seen how they will gel as a team of private detectives working for the never-seen Charles Townsend.
Not much is known yet about the tone of the movie, but Banks told Variety, “Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the ’70s. This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
The most recent draft of the script was penned by Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider’s Web) and Banks, from earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas. Original episodes of the series are now airing on MeTV and Charlie’s original Angels are appearing in the pages of Dynamite Comics in a series that has proven to be a blast. It appears that the new movie, though, will forego the retro feel for a modernized version of the characters and story.
