Sometimes good acting opportunities comes in waves. Or maybe that’s what it just looks like, from afar, when glancing at what Chante Adam’s 2020 has been like. The emerging actress started off the year in Stella Meghie’s romance The Photograph. As of today, she can also been seen in the hotly-anticipated horror film Bad Hair, from Justin Simien, on Hulu. As exciting as that may be, it’s even bigger that she’s just been cast as the female lead in Denzel Washington’s next directorial effort, Journal for Jordan.

Deadline has the details on the film, that’s been in development for a bit. Washington is following up his directing gig on the adaptation of August Wilson’s Fences, for a feature based off a best selling memoir. Journal for Jordan was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Dana Canedy and focuses on her relationship with First Sergeant Charles Monroe King, as well as the journal King wrote for their unborn child, while serving in the Iraq War. The book jumps back and forth between perspectives of the two narrative threads. Something that should allow for equal screen time for the actors. There’s also a thread that follows Canedy using her skills as New York Times editor, to dig into the story pertaining to King’s passing, while serving overseas. Wrap all that into one package, and it’s almost a surprise it’s taken a decade for this to make it to the big screen.

Everything about this Journal For Jordan has “awards potential” written all over it. From Academy Award winning Washington’s involvement behind the camera to Academy Award nominated writer Virgil Williams handling the adaptation to Emmy nominee Michael B. Jordan cast as King, this thing is loaded. And yet it’s Adams being a part of this that brings it all together. As the film’s central point, her casting is essential to the overall success of the project. That could seem like an overwhelming bit of weight on someone’s shoulders. Not so here. Given Adams’ current rise, it’s just the next step on her ascension. The fact that she’s in a Neil Burger picture next (Voyagers) & co-starring in Abbi Jacobson’s A League of Their Own series.

More on Journal For Jordan, as soon as further news comes to light. Hopefully next time, we won’t have to wait for over a year, for something to develop.
