Sometimes movies get lost in the cracks. Not in regarding to forgetting a release date, but as in you hear about it one day and I’d disappears the next. That was the case with director Josh Trank’s film about Al Capone, simply titled Capone. One that just so happens to star Tom Hardy. Pushed back several times, it looks like it’s finally going to see the light of day. How do we know this? Well, Trank took to Twitter to celebrate the occasion, along with embedding a trailer for Capone. See for yourself.

Update – Vertical Entertainment released an official HD trailer on YouTube:

Before getting to discussing the footage, Trank does drop an interesting nugget above. Name the “different title. my cut” dig. Originally, the film had the working title Fonzo, a play on Capone’s first name, Alphonse. Talk initially got traction when Hardy came on board in 2016. Instead of filming it in 2017, he opted to do Venom instead, making Capone early on in 2018. Past that, things are a blur. Judging by Trank’s comment, maybe there was a hold up when it came to edits a studio wanted to enforce? Who knows! Regardless it appears Vertical Entertainment has swooped in to give it a home. Most likely on VOD, what with theaters still shut down.

As for the footage, Hardy’s involvement is a major selling point. Trank hasn’t had the most glimmering track record so far. After bursting onto the scene with Chronicle, he made the aforementioned Fantastic Four. We all know what happened there. Again, circling back to Hardy, this is the third time he’s had the lead in a based on a true figure gangster film. Back in 2015 he pulled dual duty, as Ronnie & Reggie Kray, in Legend. Of course, most famously, he also played the title role in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson. A film that helped put him on the map, at an international level. Capone brings a strange trio of roles to a close, but not before he gets to slap on another weird voice.

What sets Capone apart from the litany of other biopics, is the time setting. Rather than chart his rise in the mafia world, before being imprisoned due to tax evasion, this takes a later look.

follows the figure out of jail and suffering from dementia, brought on by neurosyphilis. Government officials think otherwise, believing him to be faking the illness, as a means of protecting money he has hidden away. It all sounds wild, punctuated by some bloody violence. Oh and an alligator (or crocodile. Didn’t get a good look). This one is sure to keep your attention. At least, we hope that’s the case.

When you’re surrounding Tom Hardy with the likes of Kyle MacLachlan, Linda Cardellini and Matt Dillon, people will take notice. Toss in music by El-P of Run The Jewels and you’ve got a combination for a VOD hit. The question is, does this interest you, dead reader? If you plopped down money on Bloodshot, this is probably more worth your time. Either way Capone will be available, presumably on any and all platforms where you can rent digital movies, starting on May 12.
