With the amazing popularity of the Uncharted video games, Sony Pictures is planning a movie that may be starring Bryan Cranston as one of the larger supporting roles in the film. The new movie will be based on the Uncharted 3 game and Cranston would possibly be taking on the role of Victor Sullivan. Originally, Sony stated that the role of the protagonist would be played by Tom Holland, the leading actor in the Spiderman movie. However, since Sony is looking to create a long running series where the protagonist will evolve and grow into a huge role, Cranston may be the better option for long term work.
Uncharted is one of the top-rated video games on the market, so the film will surely attract gamers as well as those seeking film entertainment. The game is a series that has been developed by Naughty Dog and is available for PlayStation gaming consoles. It is a third-person shooter game that follows Nathan Drake as he travels around the world to uncover mysteries and treasures. The main series was released in 2007, called Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. This was followed by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in 2009, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in 2011 and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in 2016. The four games have been so wildly popular that Sony has decided to create films based on the series to offer viewers a taste of the video game world on the big screen.
Uncharted Movie Release
The new movie will be based on the entire video game series and the storyline will follow the descendants of the popular explorer, Sir Francis Drake. The main character is Nate Drake, playing the role of a treasure hunter who has claimed to know where El Dorado is located. The excitement of the movie unfolds as Drake carries out the search and a rival treasure hunter joins in.
The original release date for the movie was June 30, 2017, but Sony was unable to make that date and the movie does not have a specific release date as of now. However, viewers can expect the film to be released in 2018. Sony has decided to take their time in the filming of the movie to ensure they create a film that will have high rankings and will not be just another bad video game movie.
Other Movies Based on Video Games
Over the years, many movie makers have tried to break the code in creating a successful movie based on hit video games and other popular online games. Unfortunately, there have been many bad films released and no one has really captured the excitement in the right way. For more than 20 years, Hollywood has been trying to offer video game stories on the big screen, but not one has ever succeeded to earn high ratings. Some will get by due to niche appeal or by having a fan base of a certain game, but overall, Hollywood has yet to release a great movie that has been based on any video game. The first movie that was based on a hit video game was released in 1993, a game focused on Super Mario Bros. The movie was a disaster and made less than half of the budget in revenue. Even with poor ratings and unsuccessful films, the video game movies remain a popular genre. Over the years, many other films based on video games were released, such as:
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- Mortal Combat
- Resident Evil
There have been many failed attempts at creating a successful film based on hit video games. These films have flopped for many reasons. Most of the films have failed to bring the main character to life as they are in the video game. Another reason is that creators of the movies often stray from the main characters and storyline in the game, creating a disappointed group of viewers. Another major issue is that many of these failed films have been directed by those that lack creative talent and are unable to fully understand the game the movie is being based on.
Resident Evil Films
Resident Evil is one of the more popular video games that have been played over the years and it has been the basis of a six movie series. In 2001, Sony Entertainment got the rights to create a film based on the game and it was released in 2002. Sequel films were released in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2016. All of the movies had negative reviews, but even with poor ratings, the film series was one of the highest grossing series to be based on any video game. They grossed more than $1.2 billion. Despite the popularity of the video game, the movies were not as successful and were often criticized for the excessive use of violence, abandoning characters and cliffhanger endings.
Tomb Raider Movies
Tomb Raider has been a hot video game as well as a comic book for a number of years and there were two movies based on the game. The first was released in 2001 called Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. The movie received negative reviews for its poor plot, though Jolie was praised for her amazing performance. The second film was released in 2003 and was called Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. This also starred Jolie and the film once again received negative reviews.
Mortal Combat Flicks
Mortal Combat has been the focus on a number of television series and films. The video game was developed by Midway Games and is a fighting game. It was first released in 1992 and over the years, Mortal Combat games were released for multiple consoles. The first feature film was released in 1995 and had decent success. Mortal Combat: Annihilation was the second film released in 1997 and the Mortal Combat: Rebirth short film was offered in 2010. Mortal Combat was also the focus of a number of animated and television series over the years, though they were not overly successful and criticized harshly for not portraying characters in the same way as they were presented in the game.
