Batgirl has been an on-again/off-again project for the DC Extended Universe, beginning with what seems like the years-ago announcment that Joss Whedon was going to write and direct the movie. It’s been hard to keep up! I think Whedon is out now and Christina Hodson (Shut In, Unforgettable) is writing it. But that’s not even today’s news…
Today’s news is that Hodson is also writing a Birds of Prey movie that will be directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs). Taking a cue from Marvel on how Black Panther was introduced, Batgirl will first appear in Birds of Prey before starring in her own motion picture. Justin Krill from Variety also reports that the project is moving ahead of Suicide Squad 2 on DC Films’ production slate.
Batgirl is one of three founding members of the “Birds of Prey,” along with Black Canary and Huntress. It is unknown at this time if these characters will join Batgirl in the film. They were played by Rachel Skarsten and Ashley Scott in 2002’s short-lived television series, Birds of Prey. Dina Meyer played Barbara Gordon, but as her later comic incarnation, Oracle.
Although it doesn’t thrill me, it’s probably exciting to some that Birds of Prey will also feature Harley Quinn, who’s now part of no fewer than four other films in development. She’s reportedly starring in her own solo movie, a movie called Harley Quinn vs. the Joker, Gotham City Sirens (alongside Catwoman and Poison Ivy), and the sequel to Suicide Squad.
None of these have a release date. However, update your schedules with the latest dates for other upcoming DC Extended Universe films:
Aquaman – December 21, 2018
Shazam – April 5, 2019
Wonder Woman 2 – November 1, 2019
…and, if you believe they’re still going to make them:
Cyborg – 2020
Green Lantern Corps – 2020
