Assassin’s Creed Movie Sequel Already in the Works

There seems to be a lot of excitement and skepticism regarding the Assassin’s Creed movie, which is set to release in December of this year. One major vote of confidence comes the production company, New Regency, which has already begun work on a sequel. Another comes from Michael Fassbender, who is on board for the sequel.

Assassin’s Creed is a video game franchise developed by Ubisoft. In these games, two opposing factions, the Assassins and the Templars, have battled behind the scenes for centuries, shaping much of human history. The movie adaptation stars Fassbender as Callum Lynch, a man who discovers he is a modern day decendant of a Master Assassin named Aguilar. The story is a new one, created specifically for the movie. The movies apparently won’t be retelling stories from the games, but they will take place in the same world.

The news of a sequel already in the works is a little surprising, due to the rocky history of video game movies. The choice is likely due to the mostly positive reaction to photos of Fassbender and Ariane Labed in character as Callum Lynch and Maria. It’s also a telling endorsement of the upcoming film. Catch Assassin’s Creed in theaters Dec. 21st, 2016.
